Ben Brown - Teacher"My name is Ben Brown and I’m a teacher in Clwyd Community Primary School, Swansea. I teach in a Specialist Teaching Facility called The Bridge. This is for children who have Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties. The Bridge is a class pupils come to when they have been facing exclusion from their previous school. We work with them in the hope of reintegrating them back to mainstream.
In late September we visited the wetlands in Llanelli to take part in the Generation Wild activities. The children engaged so well that we decided to make this initiative our autumn term topic!
The impact has been significant for my pupils. As stated, my six pupils were all on the verge of being expelled from their previous schools. They have all displayed volatile and defiant behaviours and all have issues with doing 'work'. Amazingly, this topic has engaged them all! We have been able to use the visit and Ava’s Destiny to gain the pupil’s attention and focus. So far the children have completed the following activities: a barefooted sensory walk, finding unique leaves, splashing in water, listening to rivers, making a bird's nest, playing the migration game, measuring arm/wingspan, playing poo sticks, writing our own Ava stories and creating Ava images using AI. Please see the attachments for evidence. We will continue this amazing topic after half term.
The hands-on tasks that result in earning badges have really motivated our children. Most have also completed activities at home with their families. This is significant as the children were all very much against any form of homework in their previous schools. The families have also enjoyed being part of their child’s learning. On the back of this project we have established a weekly Forest School session. The children really enjoy this. The impact of the Generation Wild initiative really has been significant for my pupils. They are engaging with the ‘work’, eagerly anticipating the outdoor nature-based activities and showing pride in their topic books.
I plan to share this topic with other Specialist Teaching Facilities."
