Generation Wild at Dulwich Wood

Generation Wild has been a huge success at Dulwich Wood. Our year 3 classes enjoyed an amazing day at the Wetland Centre, returning home brimful of enthusiasm to continue exploring and engaging with nature. Many of the children described the trip as the best thing they did in year 3! The parents who came on the trip loved the experience too and so far two families have already returned to the centre to explore further.

On our return from the Wetland Centre, we wanted to ensure that we captured the children’s enthusiasm. So, we made a plan to give our children opportunities to continue engaging with the natural world and see if they could become a Guardian of the Wild.

Firstly, we set them a home learning project to complete a few more nature activities at home with their families. A number of children came back the very next day to report on the activities they had completed! During show and tell, children were able to share what they had got up to. We had videos of a sunset and a nest of robins in a child’s shed, a lego bird table, photos of children rolling in grass, wonderfully constructed bug hotels and binoculars to name but a few.

Not all children were able to complete activities at home, of course, so in our classes we went out into our school grounds and completed a number of activities together. These included go cloud spotting, find a lovely leaf, listen to the sounds of nature and make friends with a tree. This was a great way to explore and make the most of the outdoor learning spaces we are so lucky to have. It was so lovely to see the children genuinely take a moment to lie back and enjoy the calm, connecting with their environment in a way they don’t normally do. It was one of my most enjoyable and rewarding moments of the year as a teacher!

Finally, we are lucky enough to have a parent who works in environmental sciences and she came into school to run a workshop activity all about wetlands across the world, their importance and the need for conservation. This linked so well with the experience we had all had at the Wetland Centre and provided the children with some extremely useful context to their understanding. They ended the session by learning the Wetland Hero Pledge!

At Dulwich Wood, we now have 60 Guardians of the Wild who have collectively earned 733 badges. We hope to be able to continue this valuable project next year with another visit to the Wetland Centre to inspire more of our children to become Guardians of the Wild.
